SLU PT Student Emily Redpath Uses Scholarship to Focus on Service in Belize

Cheryl L. Cavallo Memorial Scholarship Spotlight

by Emily Redpath (DPT Class of 2023)

The Cheryl Cavallo scholarship allowed me to spend 4 weeks of my clinical experience at Hillside Healthcare International in Punta Gorda, Belize! The clinic provides free healthcare services to members of the Toledo district, where 80% of its 30,000 inhabitants are living below the Belizean poverty line.  Through the clinic, I worked with another SLU PT student, Alysa Janke, SLU faculty member, Carol Beckel, PT, PhD, and the rehabilitation director, Julia Steiner, PT, to provide physical therapy services.  There are less than 20 licensed physical therapists in Belize and Hillside provides the only physical therapy services in the Toledo district, so this is an incredibly important service that this scholarship has helped me to offer.

Each morning we worked in the outpatient clinic and every afternoon we would travel around the town for home health visits. Providing home health visits was one of my favorite parts of the experience because it allowed me to get to know my patient’s values better so that I could form a strong connection to treat them in the most effective way possible.  Additionally, we travelled on mobile clinics to villages around the Toledo district to provide care in more remote areas. The mobiles had just started up again after the pandemic during my time in Belize, so the villages that we traveled to had not been visited by Hillside in over two years.  On the mobiles we evaluated patients with musculoskeletal complaints, created long-term treatment plans for them to perform during the time in between our village visits and educated people on what physical therapy is and how simple changes in their daily activities can help to alleviate their pain and make them move better.

Another one of my favorite parts about this experience was the interprofessional care that we were able to provide. On our mobile visits, Alysa and I co-evaluated patients alongside the medical students and residents.  We got to work through patient cases together as an interprofessional team and ask questions of each other not only on mobiles, but with many patients at the clinic.  Each student had a different way of treating a patient’s diagnosis, so it was enlightening to view each patient from each medical professional’s lenses.  It was a great way for Alysa and I to advocate for physical therapy as well because the medical student and residents were able to see first hand what we do and how we can help patients.

Overall, this has been one of the most meaningful experiences that I have had during my time at SLU.  I was pushed out of my comfort zone and feel that I grew not only as a practitioner, but as a person.  This experience challenged my creativity skills in treating patients to create interventions that did not use typical resources found in clinics back in the states.  I furthered my love for physical therapy because I saw truly how impactful it can be to people’s lives, even if they are only coming a few times a month. Dr. Carol Beckel said it best upon her departure from the clinic, “A portion of my heart stays behind each trip.” This rings true for me after returning to campus from this clinical experience. I will never forget the people that I met on this rotation and I will always think of the experiences I had in Belize as I move forward in my education and career. I am beyond grateful for the Cheryl Cavallo scholarship that helped me to live out this dream and provide physical therapy to the wonderful people of Belize.

Celebrating the amazing experience

Cheryl L. Cavallo Memorial Scholarship Spotlight - DPT Student Laura Seadler Heads to Punta Gorda for 2019 Clinical
by Laura Seadler (DPT Class of 2020)

Thanks to the generosity of the Cavallo scholarship, I was able to spend my last four weeks of clinical for 2019 in Punta Gorda, Belize at Hillside Healthcare International providing outpatient and home health care to the wonderful, awesome, kind people of Punta Gorda and surrounding villages in and around the Toledo district of Belize.

On this rotation, I was given the opportunity to work alongside a PT classmate and SLU faculty member, Physician Assistant students from North Carolina and Pharmacy students from Butler University as we treated patients and interacted interprofessionally to provide cohesive patient care. It was seriously a blast.

SLU Program in Physical Therapy Student Stella Jeong Uses Scholarship for a Public Health Immersion Trip with Campus Ministry

Welcome sign to West Virginia.

Immersion Experience Spotlight - Cheryl L. Cavallo Memorial Scholarship Funds DPT Student Trip to West Virginia
by Stella Jeong (DPT Class of 2021)

With the generous gift from Cheryl L. Cavallo memorial fund, I was able to go on an immersion trip to West Virginia through SLU’s Campus Ministry. This trip has taught me and transformed me in a way that I would’ve never imagined— and I am more than happy to share my experience in this blog.

Side of the road from Kermit.

The immersion trip was constructed around the theme of “Public Health,” which was the main reason why I chose this program out of many other options. As a future health care provider and an individual who never personally experienced rural poverty, I felt called to visit WV. And here is how the trip unfolded:

Photo with staff from Mine Wars Museum.

We first arrived in a small town called Kermit and met a woman named Marlene, who greeted us with the warmest smile. She was the executive director of ABLE families, a non-profit organization that runs the afterschool program, in-home family education program, and summer camps for families who are at risk. Marlene showed us around Mingo county, and I was able to connect with people who have been laid off from coal mining companies with no health care benefit, people who suffer from opioids overdose crisis, and young mothers who were raising children with no proper resources. Hearing their stories was heartbreaking, and honestly hard to believe. I really didn’t think the situation would be this serious and alarming because it’s the United States. I thought I knew what poverty looked like, coming from a family who also struggled a lot from a developing country. This trip broke my prejudice and made me realize that I had many privileges that people from WV might not have. And these “privileges” include a grocery store with fresh produce, a hospital or health clinic that are at least within an hour away, clean water without toxic substances from factories, and environment where children can grow up without having to worry about drug addiction so close to their home. I would want to label them as “basic human needs or rights” instead of “privileges”, but unfortunately, in WV, it simply wasn’t the case.

Train transporting coal.

When we visited the Mine Wars Museum, the staff who gave us the tour said, “We would love to see [health care] students like you guys come back to West Virginia. We could really use your help.” What he said that day, made me think a lot about my future path as a Physical Therapist. What can I bring to communities that are underserved when I’m a PT? How can I raise more awareness? How can I make a change when I’m back in St. Louis? So many unanswered questions, but they are driving me to become the PT that I want to be in the future.

Micro-Farming from PATCH 21 to grow fresh produce for the communities

I was overwhelmed and confused when we left West Virginia after a week, but the immersion trip has left me with many meaningful lessons and community leaders that I can look up to. I’ve donated part of my scholarship to Marlene’s ABLE families organization as I was so inspired by the work that they do.

Progression of “Mountain Top Removal” for coal mining companies.

I encourage everyone to participate in Hustle 4 Your Health event to support the cause and for the future experiences of other PT students who may receive this amazing scholarship.

Thanks for reading my story and feel free to ask more about my trip if you want to!

SLU PT Student Albert Marban Named as Honoree of Cheryl L. Cavallo Memorial Scholarship

Scholarship Spotlight - Cheryl L Cavallo Memorial Scholarship
by Albert Marban (DPT Class of 2018)

My parents had dreams for a better life, which is why they migrated to the United States from Guerrero, Mexico. Their sacrifice to come to a country of vast opportunity has opened a door of knowledge for me in the realm of Physical Therapy. I am looking forward to sharing the knowledge I have gained from my SLU PT peers and professors with the people of Belize at the Hillside Health Care International in Punta Gorda. It's always been a goal of mine to share the knowledge I have gained from great people with individuals who come from a similar background as my parents. This scholarship has given me the opportunity to achieve this goal and learn from the people of Belize as well. A sincere thank you to the Cheryl Cavallo scholarship committee. I look forward to representing Cheryl Cavallo; who accomplished so much for her community, SLU and more importantly patients and individuals.

SLU PT Student Grows Clinical Skills and Cultural Understanding in Belize

Service Trip Spotlight - Hillside Health Care International
by Tessa Fate (DPT Class of 2018)

The Cheryl Cavallo scholarship allowed me the opportunity to complete an amazing four week clinical rotation in Belize, treating a diverse and underserved patient population and learning about the public health concerns that this country faces. I grew so much in my cultural understanding of the country as well as in my development as a physical therapist.

SLU PT Student Gains New Perspective During Service Oriented Clinical Internship

Service Trip Spotlight - Hillside Health Care International
by Lexi Modglin (DPT Class of 2018)

The Cheryl L Cavallo Memorial Scholarship allowed me the life-altering opportunity to travel to Belize for a clinical internship at Hillside Health Care International. Hillside is a health care clinic that provides medical, pharmaceutical, and rehabilitative care to underserved individuals throughout Belize's Toledo District.
One of the many impactful components of this experience was the exposure to such a diverse population clinically. Hillside provides the only rehabilitation in the district, so we treat patients post-stroke in their homes, month old babies for clubbed feet, and walk-in patients with postural dysfunction all during the same day.
Through my time in Belize as a student physical therapist I gained new skills and new perspective. I am grateful to Cheryl L Cavallo's legacy of clinical care and service, and all those who help contribute to her scholarship fund.

SLU PT Student Uses Scholarship to Build Clinical Skills While in Perú

Service Trip Spotlight - Physical Therapy in Perú
by Clarine Stephens (DPT Class of 2019)

The Cheryl Cavallo Scholarship gave me the opportunity to experience physical therapy in a culture completely different from my own. Through the Scholarship, I stayed in Piura, Perú for 3 weeks treating patients in a clinic with a Peruvian physical therapist while learning so much about how culture and society there impact quality of care and access to treatment. I also had the opportunity to treat patients in a hospice, interpret pediatric appointments between an American physician and her patients, and teach massage techniques to cosmetology students at a trade school.

My clinical application skills and my ability to communicate effectively in Spanish improved immensely, both of which will be very useful for me in my professional career. I couldn’t be more grateful for the SLU Program in Physical Therapy and the Cavallo Scholarship for providing me the opportunity to experience all that I did in Perú!

SLU PT Student Focuses on Patient-Centered Care in Jamaica

Service Trip Spotlight - FOR U Stroke Camp
by Kelsey Streiter (DPT Class of 2017)

The Cheryl Cavallo Memorial Scholarship gave me the opportunity to travel to Jamaica to participate in an intensive, week long "stroke camp" that benefited individuals whose lives had been altered by neurological injury. I spent my time in Jamaica in the hillside, collaborating with therapists and students to create individualized treatments for the week. In the end, I was able to gain invaluable experience as a student and watch the participants grow and regain function while making memories with amazing people that will last a lifetime.

SLU PT Student Uses Scholarship to Pay it Forward

Service Trip Spotlight - Pay it Forward
by Claire Kelly (DPT Class of 2018)

The Cavallo Scholarship has had a major impact on my time here at SLU, because it has allowed me to go on the Pay it Forward spring break trip multiple times. On these trips I was able to meet new people at SLU and across the country and was able to serve a variety of different communities across the United States. Without the Cheryl Cavallo Scholarship, financing the trips would have been very difficult; I am forever grateful that I received this scholarship opportunity, and I encourage all those who are thinking about applying to do so!
